Bovine Pituitary Extract (BPE) is commonly used as a mitogenic supplement in serum-free growth media. It has been shown to contain growth factors essential for the proliferation of melanocytes. In addition to its mitogenic properties, BPE exhibits antioxidant activity. Studies have reported that BPE provides protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)-induced cell death, protein oxidation, membrane fragmentation, and DNA damage.
